Tried and True versus Shiny and New

Skin MPLS staff rants on their most cringe-worthy beauty buzzword or trends companies use to sell ineffective skincare. Plus see what they say you should never stop using on your skin.

Cassie - CBD

CBD seems to be slowing down a little bit in the skincare world, but for a while there were new brands popping up all over the place with “CBD this” and “CBD that.” It was too much! And then it was marketed as the be-all and end-all for every skin concern ever -- which is simply not true. It’s anti-inflammatory and that’s about it. Instead of falling for the hype of buzzword marketing, first make sure your base routine is well-rounded and perfectly fits your skin. If you ever want to talk skincare routines, book a Skincare Product Reboot session so we can dig in!

Pamela - Non-Comedogenic Oils

Oils aimed at acne-prone skin drive me crazy -- especially coconut oil! In my past, I have even fallen for the trend of using “natural” products to treat acne. But, sorry -- it just doesn’t work. Cystic acne is infected lesions, so it’d be like trying to treat strep throat without a prescription. If if it did work, there would be unnecessary pain and suffering along the way. So stick to your 4-step Vivant regimen to treat your acne!

Haley - Clean and Natural Skincare

Since the FDA has not defined (nor do they regulate) the terms “natural” or “clean”, those terms can mean anything — which makes it very confusing to the consumer. But, unfortunately, fear sells and many companies take advantage of consumers' good intentions with misleading marketing. The best example is the phrase “free from chemicals” — it’s a scientific impossibility since all matter (including your skin, air, AND water) are made up of chemicals. Know that all chemicals are NOT evil and you simply cannot say that an ingredient is good or bad without considering HOW it is being used.

Let’s not fall victim to buying products by blindly believing that “clean” or “all-natural” is best, as many fear-mongering brands want us to believe. Pair yourself with a licensed aesthetician that works with trusted brands so you can feel secure that what you use will keep you safe and also create the healthiest skin possible — I’m here to talk ingredients with you any time!

Kaila - Multi-Level Marketing

MLM’s are always a continuously trending thing. I just don’t think anything can beat seeing an aesthetician who takes the time to feel and asses what would be best for your skin. Everyone’s skin has different needs and MLM’s don’t take the time to address individual concerns. They take a broad approach and assume what works for one person will work for the all and that’s rarely the case. And, in some situations, they can do more harm than good. If you’re struggling on where to start, you can always book a Skincare Product Reboot and we can dive into your concerns and find the right products for your skin’s needs!

Lindsey - Accutane Trending On Tiktok

Any skincare advice on TikTok is not the move, but random TikTok users suggestion to go on Accutane is a big red flag. It’s not worth the might or might not clear my acne and all the other side effects that come along. Acne can 100% be treated topically with a solid and consistent routine! All it takes is the right products, a Vivant 4-step regimen is a great place to start. So no need to hop on the Accutane “trend”. You can feel good about swiping up next time it pops up on your FYP (For You Page).
