Goldilocks and the Three C's

Which vitamin C is right for your skin?

Vitamin C can sound a bit like a fairytale. It brightens, lifts pigment, and slows down skin aging. Yes, it actually does all of those things – but people overlook it because they think their skin can't tolerate it, that it breaks them out, or that it's just a fad. The truth is, they haven't found the right one, used in the right way. Brightening and evening the skin is just the tip of the iceberg. There are several well-researched and proven reasons you should have a vitamin C in your routine – and we have three great options to choose from. A strong, a gentle, and one right in the middle, so you can be your own Goldilocks.

The Strong: Vivant Skincare's Pure C + E

Every good skincare brand should have a philosophy. For Vivant, one of theirs is that their products are worth acclimating to. Modern skincare tends to cater to people's preferences, while Vivant stays true to actually changing the skin – even if that means some initial irritation. "Don't confuse action for reaction."- Vivant

Fun fact: in its pure form, ascorbic acid has a low pH, making it acidic. If you think about vitamin C and citrus, that makes sense, right? When applied to the skin, it creates a slightly acidic environment – and for some, that can translate to redness or irritation. Vivant formulations are also designed to penetrate quickly, which can mean some initial flaking. Many vitamin C serums swap out pure ascorbic acid for something more universally tolerated, but you have to respect the Vivant philosophy. In a world that tends to over-cater, they recommend accepting a little short-term irritation for long-term gains.

What else does Pure C + E do? A good vitamin C should always be paired with vitamin E – they work as a team. Vitamin C activates vitamin E, which helps bring more moisture to the skin, while vitamin E helps stabilize vitamin C, which can be prone to oxidation. Historically, a lack of vitamin C led to scurvy, where skin lost all structural integrity. In the same sense, topical vitamin C – especially in a powerful formula – will help thicken the skin over time by building the collagen that holds it all together. So instead of thinking of vitamin C only for brightening, think of it for collagen support as well.

Another unexpected benefit of Pure C + E? While we love all pore sizes, the active nature of this serum – plus a touch of lactic acid for gentle exfoliation – makes it one of the few products we see actually minimize the appearance of pores. It truly does translate to brighter, tighter skin. We'd love to see this used twice a day – but if you'd describe your skin as dry, dehydrated, or easily reactive, try one of the options below first and work your way up!

The Gentle: Le Mieux's Vita-C Serum

There is truly no downside to Le Mieux's Vita-C Serum. What it lacks in brute force, it makes up for with a special nurturing touch that gives skin more than just an instant glow. Vita-C relies on two more stable, less acidic forms of vitamin C: magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (referred to as “MAP”) and aminopropyl ascorbyl phosphate. This means you get the full antioxidant power and redness-reducing benefits without the risk of irritation or dryness. Vita-C is also an excellent choice for anyone with melasma. And if you're one of the many who thinks your skin just doesn't like vitamin C, we encourage you to try again with this one.

What else does Vita-C Serum do? Le Mieux suspends their serums in hyaluronic acid – one of the best skincare ingredients across all skin types. While most serums are formulated in plain water, this gives Le Mieux a significant edge in active, professional skincare.

Vita-C Serum is TLC for acne-prone skin, containing glutathione, vitamin E, and amino acids – all of which strengthen the skin and promote clarity. For the same reasons, it's an excellent choice for post-peel, post-laser, or post-needling skin. Your skin is constantly exposed to environmental and internal free radical damage, making vitamin C a non-negotiable – especially when your skin is sensitized from deeper treatments.

And don't think you can only have one vitamin C. For anyone whose skin shifts with the seasons, Vita-C can be your transition serum – soothing and brightening allergy-prone skin that tends to get itchy, dull, and dry. It can absolutely serve as a companion to Pure C + E when your skin is calling for a more loving touch.

The Just Right: Dr. Esthé's Vita-C Radiance Solution Ampoule

Korean skincare is built on moisture, barrier support, and brightening – with a focus on ways to "hack" skin aging. Unsurprisingly, SPF and antioxidants are at its core. One of the best ways to enhance your SPF? Apply vitamin C first. Layering vitamin C beneath your SPF isn't just trendy – it's genuinely impactful. The two work synergistically: vitamin C helps your SPF perform better, and SPF helps preserve your vitamin C.

The Vita-C Radiance Ampoule earns our "just right" vote because it contains both forms of vitamin C – ascorbic acid and MAP. However, it's less intense than Pure C + E because the ascorbic acid is at a lower concentration and the formula leans into added hydration. Like Le Mieux, Dr. Esthé goes beyond plain water as a base: the Vita-C Radiance Ampoule is suspended in lemon peel water, delivering natural vitamin C within the vitamin C. Very "just right."

What else does the Vita-C Radiance Ampoule do? An ampoule is similar to a serum but typically lighter in feel and weight. This one applies quickly and hydrates instantly. It fights hyperpigmentation through both its ascorbic acid and lemon peel water, but is gentle enough for sensitive or even rosacea-prone skin. It also features a few standout Korean skincare ingredients: goat milk, long used to soothe sensitive skin; allantoin, a naturally occurring emollient known for its healing properties; and bisabolol, a chamomile-derived ingredient celebrated for its calming effects. From a formulation standpoint, Dr. Esthé really hits this one out of the park – delivering active results without any irritation. While all three of our vitamin C serums have a place in our hearts and on our shelves, this one is the true Goldilocks choice. Proof that yes, you really can have it all.
