Adaptogens: Can They Balance Your Body and Skin?

What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are natural substances (certain herbs, mushrooms, and plants) that, when ingested, may aid the body's response to stress. It's easiest to think of them as balancers that can help normalize hormone levels and regulate the body. Today, adaptogens are gaining popularity as natural health remedies and approaches to holistic wellness also increase.

Who and what would they work for?

There are various types of adaptogens, and the different adaptogens have different specialties. You may be familiar with ashwagandha. It's one of the most common adaptogens, and it currently has the most research showing that it can lower stress and anxiety by triggering positive changes in your hormones. And, remember back from previous blogs, our hormones control everything!

Other adaptogens like reishi mushroom and ginseng have been shown to help with immune support and fatigue. But, as always, work with your healthcare provider to determine if adaptogens are right for you – we don't offer nutritional advice.

What could they do for your skin?

Because stress is a huge factor in many skin conditions and stress can flare acne, it's possible that taking adaptogens could help control acne and other stress-related skin conditions. When stressed, our cortisol levels go into overdrive, boosting our oil production – which triggers acne. So, if adaptogens lower cortisol levels, they could help control stress-related breakouts.

And it's possible that adaptogens could also help with skin picking because picking is very much connected to stress and anxiety. So, reach out to your medical provider if you'd like to find out how to start on adaptogens for you.

Can you use adaptogens topically?

So, if adaptogens are nature's great balancer, what kind of effects could adaptogens have on your skin when applied topically? Skinbetter Science has made an exciting new breakthrough product that harnesses the power of adaptogens to balance your skin tone, remove stubborn pigment, reduce pore size, and improve dullness and texture.

Their newest product, Mystro Active Balance Serum, is acne-safe and contains a potent adaptogen blend that works synergistically to improve all aspects of your skin. Like adaptogens, everyone can probably benefit from this serum, especially those bothered by redness, dullness, and uneven skin.

Most excitingly, when applied twice daily, most users see early results as quickly as two weeks! We're certainly happy to have added this product to the Skin MPLS curated skincare product collection offering! Note, if you'd like to try Mystro out, it would be your final "active'" serum, and you want to apply one half to a full pump to your face and let it dry before applying your hydrating serums, eye product, moisturizer, and sunscreen. And though we cannot sell Skinbetter Science products online, you can message or call us to order anytime for shipping or in-store pick-up!
