Social Media Sobriety In Seven Steps

If you are still impulse-buying skincare from influencers and ads, here is our abridged program to help you quit for good.

Step 1: Accept the reality

While there may be exceptions here and there, the vast majority of products aren't right for your skin. If every product influencers and TikTok celebrities sponsored worked as well as they said, there wouldn't be so many.

Step 2: Trust in a more knowledgeable power

Some people are so willing to trust the internet and think aestheticians are just trying to sell them. Yes, we are trying to sell you, but it's not just to sell you. It's to help you fix your skin issues. Products are your tools, and treatments are the refinement and training you need to become your own expert, so you stop being easily influenced. Listen to an expert who really sees, knows, and touches skin all day.

Step 3: Soul search

What are you really looking for? What are you willing to spend? What don't you like about your skin? Often, people come in for treatments and have sticker shock, but then go home and order other new random products on a whim. Sit down and really think about what your skin needs, and you can come up with a better plan!

Step 4: Be ready to let go

It's hard to give up products you've paid for, but the truth is, if they're not right for your skin, they can cause harm in the long run. You are only as strong as your weakest link (i.e., a product that causes acne flare-ups, irritation, rosacea inflammation, or dryness, which can hinder your goal achievement). Give them away or throw them away. You've already spent the money; the damage is done. Time to let go.

Step 5: Be humble

No one likes admitting they were wrong, and the internet makes everyone feel like an expert these days. It's okay if you're unsure about your skin type, what an AHA is, or which products are best for you. Even aestheticians are continually learning, and they see, touch, read, study, and talk about skin all week long.

Step 6: Check in with plan and purpose

If you are a marathon runner, do you ever get to stop training? Nope! The same is true for your skin. The work never ends, and if you get complacent, your skin will backslide. Check in with yourself, or, better yet, an aesthetician every few months to make sure your homecare is getting your skin in shape.

Step 7: Share the message

For some, it's not as "cool" to take advice from an aesthetician as it is to find the newest, hottest TikTok products. Can we change that, please? Yes, some people have naturally beautiful skin and can use anything; however, most people with skin that others envy work with an aesthetician and receive treatments and professional products. There's no secret, just following all the steps to success. Let's spread the word and stop gatekeeping what really cleared your acne or got rid of your sun damage. Chances are that it was time, expert product recommendations, and stopping the noise from social media influencers.
