Robot Regimen
Are you afraid of a robot takeover? Us too! So, when we started hearing that new clients were getting their regimens from AI, it was officially time to intervene! It may be enticing to try to fix your skin without leaving your bed, but we have the skin(nie) on what it means to let AI choose your skincare.
It was only a matter of time before people started asking Grok, ChatGPT, or Gemini what they should use on their skin. I mean, if robots can plan a European vacation, summarize a very technical article into "regular" terms, and even tell you what car you should buy, why not ask them about your skincare routine – right?
It's probably no shock where we stand on this – we aren't fans. Robots are still figuring out the concept of critical thinking, and they haven't yet cracked the code on why professional skincare products are more effective than mass-market skincare products. However, the final thing that really irks us is that they don't seem to understand the value of professional facial treatments.
Nonetheless, we remained as impartial as possible and asked AI for some sample skincare regimens. We used a sample client and typed in: "I'm 35, have acne-prone skin, and am concerned about aging. Can you help me build a skincare regimen?"
Grok, Gemini, and Chat GPT all had similar responses. They provided some helpful bullet-pointed information on skincare steps. AI does excel in bullet points, after all. Something is better than nothing, but it's just an aggregate of the ideas that are already out there. So, if you want an unoriginal, uninspired skincare routine – then AI is perfect for that.
But what was interesting is that the AI-recommended regimens looked a lot like the regimens that new clients come in already using – but they come in because they are complaining that it's not working. Time and time again, we've seen clients and their skin unhappy with these products. The recommended products were the usual drugstore and Sephora suspects because the internet is saturated with those – and more than one of the recommended products was not safe for acne-prone skin.
For now, AI doesn't think like humans do. Whatever AI bot you prefer is simply saving you time scanning the internet for products, reviews, and other information. However, to truly improve your skin, you need an expert to apply critical thinking and identify your skin's underlying issues, recommending products and lifestyle changes that have been proven effective for others with similar concerns.
While AI can organize a regimen and appear to look like an expert, don't be fooled – the answers AI gives are only as good as the information going in. And we all know what's out on the internet! Buying based on AI is just going to delay your results. Luckily for us, it's going to be a long time before a robot can provide a facial treatment like Skin MPLS can. ;)
