Acne Imposter: Keratosis Pilaris

Some chronic skin conditions disguise themselves as acne. And while there are key differences, fortunately, the treatment is usually similar – especially in the case of Keratosis Pilaris.

Keratosis Pilaris (AKA “KP”) is a patch of bumps that can be found on cheeks, arms, backs, thighs, legs, or butt. It is most common on the arms, thighs, and cheeks though. It’s almost more like a rash than acne though because, unlike acne, there is no oil or bacteria component.

KP is a buildup of dead skin (keratin) so exfoliating the dead skin cells and keeping the pores clear of buildup is the necessary treatment. Since it is dry and can be itchy, you will want to moisturize it. But, don’t use any old body lotion though – pore-cloggers and fragrances both may irritate and flare your KP. You want to focus instead on hydrating it.

KP can be chronic so if you treat it once and then stop it will likely just come right back. If you are prone to KP you will have to keep these products and treatments in your regimen for the long haul. KP will typically be worse in the winter and drier months. And in the summer, use any of our acne-safe SPFs to avoid irritating it with low-quality ingredients found in over-the-counter drug store SPFs.

While you may think you need to call the dermatologist, your aesthetician will actually have a more customized regimen for your skin!
